Under Idaho law, the county sheriff is an elected official serving a four-year term and is responsible for performing all the duties and responsibilities of the office. State policy designates the sheriff, along with the county prosecuting attorney, as the primary authority for enforcing all criminal laws within the county. In practice, the sheriff’s office carries out a wide range of duties, including enforcing state and local laws in unincorporated areas, operating the county jail, serving court papers such as writs and summonses, maintaining public order, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with other law-enforcement agencies.
